The Milwaukee Bicycle Collective is a volunteer-driven,  501(c)(3) non-profit organization that helps provide individuals, groups, and events with refurbished bicycles. We also assist with bike repair and instruction in a creative and supportive environment and at an affordable cost. We have been working since 2002 to create a world where human powered transportation is the norm and available to everyone.

Lake Express Ferry sponsors our annual bike donation drive. Join us Thursday, April 20, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM at Lake-Express Ferry, 2330 S. Lincoln Memorial Drive, Milwaukee. One free round-trip ticket per household with bike donation.

Buying a bike

Our shop is open to the public and anybody can drop by to test ride and buy a bike in person. All bikes available for sale have been checked for safety by a professional mechanic.

Donating a bike

We accept donations of bicycles, parts, tools and other accessories during open shop hours. We do not do pick ups. Donation receipts are available for tax write-off purposes.

Donating a bike reduces landfill waste, helps us fix other bikes, and bring positive energy to communities in need.

Volunteering and earning a bike

If you would like to volunteer, stop by the shop and we’ll get you started. We always need good mechanics, but if you’re willing to learn or willing to help out in other ways, we’ll work something out.

After readying two bikes for sale (or volunteering in other tangible ways) a volunteer may begin putting their hours towards earning a bike. Time is deducted from the price of the bike at a rate of $8/hr. Volunteers are limited to one bike per year.

Think you can’t fix a bike? We beg to differ. Come in and prove yourself wrong.

Fixing your bike (DIY)

We take a white-gloved approach to fixing your bike. Volunteers can help explain how to fix your bike, but it’s up to you to do the work. DIY stands are available first-come/first-served. The suggested donation for the use of of tools and repair stands is $5-10 after the first 30 minutes. We retain the right to limit stand time as our needs evolve.

Youth program

We give away bikes to youth 8 and under anytime we’re open during the 1st through the 8th of the month. We only give away bikes that have been given a proper safety check by a qualified mechanic. We also fix bikes for youth (pending time and volunteer availability).

Current Hours

We will have open shop hours beginning in May 2017 – please check this page for updates. Want to help us open more?
