The Milwaukee Bicycle Collective is an all-volunteer, project-oriented non-profit organization that helps provide individuals, groups, and events with safe, used bicycles. We can also assist with bike repair and instruction in a creative and supportive environment and at an affordable cost.

If your organization is in need of bicycles, contact us to see if we can get something started.

Organizations with whom we’re currently working:

  • MPS Mountain Bike Team
  • South Side Bike Day
  • National Night Out
  • Homeless Veterans

If you would like to work with us to help distribute bikes to programs in need, please contact us.

Buying a bike

Our shop is open to the public and anybody can purchase a bike through our online store or drop by to test ride and buy a bike in person. All bikes available for sale have been checked for safety by a professional mechanic. We have MANY more bikes than what is listed online in various states of disrepair. Come into our shop to see more (but note, these bikes are not fixed on demand).

Donating a bike

We accept donations of bicycles, parts, tools and other accessories during open shop hours. We do not do pick ups. Donation receipts are available for tax write-off purposes.

Donating a bike reduces landfill waste, helps us fix other bikes, and bring positive energy to communities in need.

Volunteering and earning a bike

If you would like to volunteer, stop by the shop and we’ll get you started. We always need good mechanics, but if you’re willing to learn or willing to help out in other ways, we’ll work something out.

After readying two bikes for sale (or volunteering in other tangible ways) a volunteer may begin putting their hours towards earning a bike. Time is deducted from the price of the bike at a rate of $8/hr. Volunteers are limited to one bike per year.

Think you can’t fix a bike? We beg to differ. Come in and prove yourself wrong.

Fixing your bike (DIY)

We take a white-gloved approach to fixing your bike. Volunteers can help explain how to fix your bike, but it’s up to you to do the work. DIY stands are available first-come/first-served. Toolbox rental is $5 and stand rental is free. We retain the right to limit stand time as our needs evolve.

Youth program

We give away bikes to youth 8 and under anytime we’re open during the 1st through the 8th of the month. We only give away bikes that have been given a proper safety check by a qualified mechanic. We also fix bikes for youth (pending time and volunteer availability).

Current Hours

We try to keep our hours as consistent as possible, but since this is a volunteer-based operation we cannot guarantee open hours. Therefore, we recommend you call before you come to make sure we are here. Want to help us open more?

We feel strongly about working to create a world where human powered transportation is the norm and available to everyone. The Milwaukee Bicycle Collective has been working towards this goal since June 17, 2002.
